How to Open a Checking Account
Looking at a Relationship Checking, eChecking or Free Checking account? You can open any of these accounts online in just minutes.
Interested in Student Checking, Military Checking, Certificates of Deposit (CDs), or HSA Checking or CD account? You’ll need to apply online before we can open an account for you. Here's a checklist of what you'll need to have on hand when you apply.
- Social Security Number of all account owners
- Driver’s license or State ID card
- Home address and phone number
Once we receive your application, we’ll contact you to stop in and complete the process. Or call your local branch to schedule an appointment during regular banking hours.

Share Your Travel Plans to Ensure Smooth Service
It’s important to contact Merchants Bank before you leave town to ensure the best service with your debit card while you’re away. If you make purchases in a state or country where you don't normally use your card, we may flag these transactions as fraud unless we know otherwise.
When contacting the Bank regarding your travel plans, we will ask for the following information:
- Dates of your trip(s)
- Exact travel locations
- How to contact you while you’re away
You can notify us by:
- Submitting a Travel Alert under the Profile section in Online Banking
- Calling us at (866) 496-0522
We strongly recommend that you carry more than one form of payment during your trip. Interruptions within any card network are always possible. Carrying multiple forms of payment reduces frustration when trying to complete a purchase.
